You Don't Want This In Your House...

Last fall I had the pleasure of discovering an ant colony in the sill of our basement window.  Hundreds of black carpenter ants ran for their lives as my wife and I suited up with bug killer and shop vacs.  I had to remove the old window sill and get some new wood in there along with remove the old wall and clean up the sawdust from years of gnawing.  Financially it wasn't too big of a deal, just a serious pain in the ass.  I'm handy with drywall and mudding - thank goodness.

I thought we were done with them until Sunday night.  I was watering my plants by the dining room window and did a double take.  What the hell!!  Between the storm and the interior window (old wooden windows, btw) there were about 200 or more FLYING ANTS!  After a few explicit swears were released I went outside with more bug spray and began killing in vengeance for invading our home.

It seems that this is ANOTHER colony!  Curse you wooden windows... curse you.  So now begins the fun of removing the old window, killing another colony and buying a new window.  I did learn something interesting though about ants.

If they are flying ants it means they are the 2nd generation of wingless ants and they are being pushed out of the nest because there is no room for them.  Excellent.  NOT.

I know that I'll be blogging about this a few times and will provide updates and pictures of my ordeal should you find yourself in the same spot.  Oh... any advice is most welcome.  Feel free to comment below.

    I have this problem right now! I am a renter and these winged bugs are invading everything. I have sprayed and sprayed, but I know the super and landlord will need to take everything out and remodel like you're doing. Sooo I gave my 60 days notice, I have a cat and it's just easier for me to find a new place. Some tips: Ants hate cinnamon. I can't use the bug spray inside regularly because of my cat, so I just put tonne of cinnamon all over the window sill. They seem to be avoiding coming in now!

      @Kristen Hey Kristen,
      Thanks for the cinnamon tip! We have pets and the last thing I want to do is spray poison "inside" our house.

      Cheers.

    My story won't help your current situation, but I feel your pain. Years ago, when we lived in our first house, we had this happen. Mostly we just saw the odd flying ant here and there, but nothing major... and only in our dining room. Then one day, when I was about 7 months pregnant, I wasn't feeling well and came home from work early. I walked in to find a black, vibrating carpet in the dining room. The ENTIRE carpet was covered in thousands of flying ants, all crawling over each other. I ran to my room and closed the door, stuffing towels under the jam. It was the most frightening thing I ever saw. I stayed there until my husband came home 6 hours later. By then there were only a scattered few still there, and we never did figure out where they came from or where they went. After that, we never really saw them in the house again, but a week or so later we had the same thing happen on the lawn - a patch of them so thick it looked like undulating waves in the ocean moving across the lawn. Very eerie. We sprayed the heck out of the lawn with insect killer!
    Anyway, in useful news, friends of ours have had an ongoing problem with ants for several years and nothing they tried worked... until someone suggested cinnamon. So, as Kristen below suggested, it would be a good idea to try. Good luck!
