Year of the Skunk? Anti-Smell Remedy!

Posted By: Maie Pauts · 9/4/2012 10:30:00 AM

This year, more than any I can remember, I have have been smelling skunk in my neighborhood.  Several times, the smell wafting in from an open window has actually woken me from my sleep. Last night when I came home there was a young one at the edge of my property by the road.  Gosh they are cute and I personally love all wildlife but I have a dog. A curious dog. A dog that is cute but a little stupid when it comes to interacting with wildlife.  And a dog that not only is used to being an indoor dog but also one that shares my sofa and bed.

So you can see the problem here. I'm freaking out!  I love to just open the side door at night and let out my little Timbit (yes that's the name of my dog ... and yes I've probably saddled him with self esteem issues but that's another blog).  But I'm mortified that he'll come face to ass (and that would be his face and the skunks ass) with Pepe Le Pew and I'll be stuck dealing with a traumatized super smelly pooch!

My brother told me about a skunk remedy he'd seen on TV  that's suppose to be the one that works. No tomatoe juice ... that's apparently not effective. I've googled it and it involves just 3 ingredients.

1 quart Hydrogen Peroxide

1/4 cup baking soda

1-2 tsp liquid soap (like Soft Soap)

Once this is all mixed together apply to the dry dog as soon as possible. The quicker it's on the dog - the more effective. Let the solution sit on the dog for 5 minutes before rinsing. Be careful to not get it into the dogs eyes, ears or mouth. One site even suggested mineral oil drops to pro tect your dogs eyes.

Repeat if necessary.

I've put together a box of all these ingredients along with a pair of rubber gloves at the cottage ... just in case but I think I better get anothe box together for here in the city too!

This site had further good tips and info.   http://dogs.about.com/od/caringfordogsandpuppies/ht/deskunking.htm

And for you visual learners ... here's a great video!  ( this dog looks a lot like my black and white Timbit)

It happens. Been there done that ! Always seems to happen at night when you're dead tired and it's the last thing you want to deal with in the best of times. ;?(
