I've read,  that during difficult financial times and recessions, sales of certain luxury items actually increase.  While big ticket items like cars housed, boats etc may decline in sales, it's certain small things that see a boost. 

For men, they buy more ties and socks.  Maybe they can't afford a new suit but a new tie is affordable and will give them a lift.

For women, it's cosmetics.  Even if you can't afford a nice vacation or any new clothes, chances are a new lipstick can be worked into the budget and give you that quick hit of "feel goodness". 

I've also read that really good chocolate sells well during hard times.   A lovely, yummy morsel or 2 from Godiva or Purdy's can make you feel like you've really treated yourself! 

For me it's a few things ... a bottle of wine, good bread, coffees and teas, some nice cheese, maybe makeup, body lotion, a book and believe it or not ... a new houseplant.  Any one of these things are nice little luxuries that I can buy for under $20 bucks and  make happy!
