Album Review

This CD is actually somewhat better sounding than the first volume, on a technical level, consisting of material from later in The Five Satins' history, from 1957 through 1960. It's of slightly less obvious appeal, owing to the fact that it encompasses the Bill Baker-era in the group's history -- there is no "In The Still Of The Night" to pull the uninitiated into buying this CD. But the music is stunning, a little more lush and opulently produced, with very tasteful use of strings on several tracks, and some of the most elegant singing in the group's history is represented here, sounding about as good as it ever has. This version of the group was smoother than its predecessor, and the ballads work better than the rhythm numbers, but it's all superb music, even including some leftovers from the Fred Parris-era in their history.
