Album Review

This is a CD reissue of two LPs by the great sambista Paulinho da Viola: A Toda Hora Rola Uma História (1982) and Prisma Luminoso (1983) in the series 2 É Demais. The inlay of this series is very poor, not having much information. A Toda Hora Rola Uma História has the delicious samba "Rumo Dos Ventos," from whose lyrics the title of the album was taken. "Só O Tempo" is a beautiful and philosophical samba-canção with an excessive electric piano (a little is too much for this important and sincere artist). "Não É Assim" restores the hills atmosphere. "A Maldade Não Tem Fim" also has an unusual rendition: a delicate piano backing his singing without any rhythm. This album also had the hit "Que Trabalho É Esse" and "Nós, Os Foliões." Prisma Luminoso reaffirms da Viola's project of expanding the samba genre with both feet deeply rooted in the tradition; the best example here is "Cadê A Razão," with its jazz influences in the harmony and melody -- not by chance dedicated to João Bosco, Djavan, and Gilberto Gil (with whom he would break a three-decade friendship after the disgusting episode of 1995). But the excesses of electronics of the previous album were discarded in favor of a more present brass section. The album had no hits.
