Moment of My Life is an admirable attempt at summarizing
Jocelyn Brown's prolific career as one of the preeminent disco/dance vocalists from the '70s through the '90s, covering solo material and tracks she fronted for groups and producers like
Musique,
Inner Life,
Salsoul Orchestra,
Cerrone,
Joe Bataan, and
Masters at Work. The one problem with this disc's desire to cover as much ground as possible is the fact that radio edits are often favored over superior full-length and extended versions; both
Larry Levan's mix of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and
François Kevorkian's mix of "Keep on Jumpin'," for instance, are sacrificed in order to cover more ground. The blame can be placed on
Brown more than the compilers; it's her fault for being responsible for bringing life to such a plentiful amount of excellent songs throughout the course of her career -- it's all but impossible to do her service within the confines of one compact disc. A proper anthology of
Brown's mark on dance music would require the space of several discs and dozens of licensing nightmares, but
Moment of My Life does just fine for the time being, tying up enough classics to provide an excellent starter kit.
