Album Review

Although the (very brief) liner notes say this is a compilation of rehearsals and demos from 1967-1968, those dates must be at least a little off, since "Give Booze a Chance" is a parody of "Give Peace a Chance," which was not released until 1969. Anyway, the 30-track disc will be of value to serious Bonzo fans, as the sound is good to excellent and the material offers glimpses of works in progress, alternate versions, and some wholly unreleased songs. Since most of this consists of not-terribly-different versions of tunes that are on Bonzo albums, however, it couldn't be recommended to the less enamored with gusto. As for some of the prime otherwise unavailable numbers, there are Viv Stanshall's doo wop parody "Mr. Hyde in Me," Neil Innes' silly piano ballad "Boiled Ham Rhumba" (a John Lennon parody perhaps?), and the oom-pah-time vaudevillian goof "Little Sir Echo." Some of the numbers have only been heard in BBC versions previously ("Give Booze a Chance," "Sofa Head"); at the other extreme, there are also renditions of some of their best-known (and best) songs, like "I'm the Urban Spaceman," "Canyons of Your Mind," and "The Equestrian Statue."
