Album Review

Kustbandet is a 12-piece Swedish classic jazz group (three trumpets, three woodwinds, one trombone, and a five-piece rhythm section with both tuba and string bass) that revives some of the music from the 1920s. The pre-swing big band on this CD performs arrangements by trumpeter Bent Persson (the best-known player in the group), altoist Goran Eriksson, Claus Jacobi, Rolf Koschorrek, and Keith Nichols. The charts are similar but not exactly the same as those utilized in vintage recordings by Fletcher Henderson, Louis Armstrong's Orchestra, and various dance bands. American singer Carol Leigh guests on seven selections and there are some fine short solos (Persson is not overly featured) but the emphasis is generally on the written ensembles. Among the tunes explored are "Hop Head," "Star Dust," "Freeze and Melt," and "That Rhythm Man." No real surprises occur but fans of the genre will enjoy this release.
