Album Review

This set, which includes a DVD documentary and a concert CD, was recorded in the summer of 1990 in Asbury Park, New Jersey, just prior to the American Recordings series that an autumnal Cash did with producer Rick Rubin as a sort of capstone to his long and amazing career. It’s an OK and at times even heart-swelling performance, and Cash fans and collectors will love it, but this set lacks the audience energy that made his earlier live recordings like At Folsom Prison so extra-special and vital. But hey, it’s Johnny Cash, and for most that will be more than enough.
