Album Review

To hear unadulterated Fats Waller on stride piano is like being in seventh heaven. But take into account that these recordings, originally released on the Biograph label, are player piano roll transcriptions, digitally reproduced and astonishingly clear as a bell, and you have the makings for a unique listening experience. On top of that, these tunes -- including "18th Street Strut," "Clearing House Blues," "Snake Hips," and "Got to Cool My Doggies Now" -- are not your standard Waller fare. Fear not, for there are plenty of familiar themes included on this thoughtfully programmed CD. Those who miss his ribald singing or realize these 13 tracks are samey sounding might be disappointed, but not likely after hearing this excellent reissue.
