Long Live The Drive-In Movie Theatre!

"It's time to...stretch and fetch!...See what's cooking at our refreshment counter!"...How could we ever forget about those old Drive-In Movie Theatre intermission commercials!

Going to the Drive-In is not just about watching the movie; it's an all-round fun experience!

If you haven't gone for a long time (perhaps even since you were a teenager), you should give it a whirl--especially if the kids haven't been yet. There are still a few locations here and there around Ontario; I know of one--'The North York Drive-In' in East Gwilliimbury, just north of Newmarket. It's such a great throw-back to simpler times; a great escape from the usual, fast-paced way we enjoy entertainment these days.

It's a perfect outing for the family; ever since our kids were small, we've made it a tradition to go once or twice every summer and we all have a blast---the kids love it. The best thing to do is remove the back seats from the mini-van, throw in a bunch of blankets and pillows for the kids, park with the back-end facing the screen and open the hatch. Mom and dad can sit in a couple of fold-out chairs right beside. The sound comes through  on your car radio, so if you have a good stereo then it's really awesome.

It's cost-effective. too, as kids under 12 usually get in free and the adult cost is lower than a typical movie theatre...and you get to see two new movies for the price of one! We buy a couple of things from the concession, but most stuff--pop, chips, popcorn--we'll bring with us from home.

Watching movies under the stars is quite an experience and if you get there early, you can toss a football or frisbee around or push the kids on the swing set. Or, how about all those old video games ('Frogger', 'Pac-man') and pinball machines from the eighties?! They have those still, too. When we first took our kids, they asked "Pinball machine---what's that?" No, it's not something you can download for PS2 or 3 or iphone...

....and I guess that's the whole point.
